We connect homeowners with local installers. We don’t install, and we’re not a contractor.
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 Source: NOAA National Hurricane Center, Atlantic hurricane season (opens in new tab). The time to get quotes is outside it. Once a storm has a name, every installer on this coast is booked.
Post-Katrina building rules shape the install
Hurricane Katrina came ashore here in 2005, and the rebuilding that followed left the coast with elevation requirements and wind-zone detailing that other parts of the region do not have. For a generator that shows up as pad height, anchoring and where equipment is allowed to sit. These are code questions with local answers — verify them with your city or county before you commit to a location on the property.
Small-site installers do well here
This is not a market dominated by one big player. Electricians, HVAC shops and propane dealers all install standby units along the coast, and the mix means quotes can differ widely for the same house and the same unit. Get more than one. Ask each for the same scope so you are comparing the same job.
Salt air plus humidity
Coastal Mississippi gives equipment the same treatment the rest of this coast does: salt in the air, long humid summers, and a long run of hot months when a generator that fails its weekly self-test will not get noticed until it matters. Ask what maintenance the installer offers and what the self-test schedule is, rather than assuming the unit will tell you.
Fuel: what Mississippi Gulf Coast actually has
Natural gas availability varies by city and by street along the Mississippi coast, and the provider differs between municipalities. Ask the gas provider for your address whether there is a main you can tap; where there is not, propane is standard and the tank becomes part of the quote.
Permits and code: verify locally
A standby generator install normally needs electrical and gas permits and an inspection, and a licensed installer usually pulls them as part of the job. Requirements, fees and clearances are local and they change, so we don’t publish numbers for them. Verify with your city building department, or Harrison or Jackson County code administration Harrison County MS, code administration (opens in new tab), and get the clearances from the manufacturer’s install manual plus the local code official — not from a website.
What it costs around here
Installed cost is driven by the house, not the ZIP code: the size you need, whether gas is already at the property, how far the unit sits from the supply, and whether the electrical panel needs work. Published figures for a 22 kW air-cooled unit, installed:
- $8,000–$16,000 average installed cost of a 22 kW air-cooled standby unit Source: Generac, home standby installed cost (opens in new tab)
- $11,000–$15,000 typical installed cost reported in Oct 2026 Source: The Watt Guide, typical installed cost (Oct 2026) (opens in new tab)
- $8,800–$20,700 the wider range of reported installed prices Source: wholehousegeneratorcost.com, reported installed range (opens in new tab)

Mississippi Gulf Coast: common questions
Do coastal Mississippi elevation rules affect a generator install?
They can. Elevation and wind-zone requirements along the coast affect where equipment sits and how it is anchored. The rules are local and specific to your parcel, so verify them with your city building department or the county before you choose a spot for the pad.
Natural gas or propane on the MS coast?
Both are used. Natural gas is simpler where a main is available, propane is the fallback and brings a tank with it. Confirm with the gas provider for your address, because the answer moves the price.
